Autonomy: The Foundation
The word autonomy comes from the Greek autos (self) and nomos (law). It means to give yourself your own rules rather than having them imposed from outside. Immanuel Kant elevated autonomy as the highest form of human dignity, arguing that true freedom means being self-governing, not just following orders or social expectations.
Key Philosophical Traditions
Existentialism: Jean-Paul Sartre declared we are “condemned to be free.” Humans must create their own meaning and purpose rather than accepting pre-defined roles from society, employers, or institutions.
